In Memoriam... On the left is a photo of Porter and Sullivan, two very sweet males from our farm. Porter was a huacaya and Sullivan was a suri, and they were both the nicest animals you'd ever meet. A few years ago, I threw some pine boughs in for the guys to nibble on. They loved to eat pine needles. However, mixed in with the harmless pine branches was a plant known as a Japanese yew; a decorative shrub. The yew leaves resemble pine needles very closely, but the yew is deadly toxic to cattle and other herd animals. Unfortunately I didn't take note of the difference in time, and fed my alpacas the poisonous leaves along with the pine boughs. The next day, both of these wonderful boys died of heart failure due to the toxic nature of the yew leaves. |
| My wife and I are heartbroken at the loss of our boys. It was tragic, all the more because it was a preventable mistake that we will make sure never happens again. To guard against such a devastating blow to your own animals and pets, please take note of the list below, which compiles some of the more dangerous plants that should be kept out of your pastures and grazing fields. This list is by no means 100% complete, but it's a start. | |
